Getting found on Google in 2026

Having a website is no longer enough. To be found you have to answer your audience's questions, better and more clearly than anyone else. Here are the moves that actually count.

In short

Getting found on Google takes more than having a website: you have to answer your audience's questions, better and more clearly than the others. Being fast counts, saying something useful counts, and helping Google understand your pages counts. And in 2026 there is one change nobody should ignore: answers written by artificial intelligence.

SEO is not a magic formula or a trick. It is making your site the best answer to what somebody was looking for. Plenty of people think you put a few pages online and wait: it does not work like that, and it never did. Google has millions of pages to choose from, and it puts at the top the ones that genuinely help the person searching. Your job is to be one of those. Five concrete moves follow from that.

Being found means being the best answer to what somebody was looking for.

1. Measure what is happening

Before changing anything, you have to see. Switch on Google Search Console and GA4: the first tells you which searches you appear on and in what position, the second how people behave once they arrive, what they read and where they leave. Both are free and both are the foundation: they tell you where you are losing opportunities and which pages already work. Without those two tools you are working on instinct, and instinct is wrong nearly every time.

2. Be fast and comfortable to use

Google looks at the real experience of the person visiting, summed up in three numbers (the Core Web Vitals): the main content has to load within 2.5 seconds, the site has to respond to clicks within 200 milliseconds, and things must not jump about while the page builds (under 0.1). In most cases the weight slowing everything down is the images: making them lighter is nearly always the first move, and the most profitable.

3. Answer real questions

For years people believed it was enough to repeat the right word often enough. Today it is the opposite: Google does not reward pages stuffed with keywords, it rewards the ones that answer well what somebody was looking for. Start from your customers' real questions, the ones they ask you on the phone or in person, and answer those with concrete examples and clear language. Who is speaking counts too: Google weighs experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, the criterion it calls E-E-A-T. In plain terms: show you genuinely know your subject, bring your own examples, and say it so it lands first time. One page that settles a doubt is worth more than ten pages written for search engines.

4. Help Google understand

Content is the heart of it, but the technical details that let the engine read you properly need looking after too. They are the same ones that weigh on what a website costs, and that nobody puts in the quote:

  • Clear titles and descriptions on every page.
  • Images with sensible file names and alt text that describes them.
  • Internal links joining the pages up: from a piece on what a website costs to one on Google Ads, the reader always finds the next step.
  • Structured data (schema) telling Google what the page contains.
  • No 404 errors left lying around.
  • An up-to-date sitemap.

5. The 2026 change: AI Overviews

By now one search in four or five shows an answer written by artificial intelligence, above the classic results. To be among the sources the AI cites you need well-structured content, precise claims backed by sources, and regular updates. One important technical detail: do not block the AI crawlers in your robots.txt, or you shut yourself out of this new shop window. Being found today means being found there too: it is the work we do through lead generation.

Worth remembering
  • Measure before you change anything: Search Console and GA4 are the foundation, and they are free.
  • Google rewards pages that answer well, not pages stuffed with keywords.
  • In 2026, do not block the AI crawlers in robots.txt, or you shut yourself out of AI Overviews.

Frequently asked questions

Is having a website enough to get found on Google?

No. Having a site is the starting point, not the destination. To be found you have to answer your audience's questions, better and more clearly than the others, and be fast and easy for Google to understand.

How much does site speed matter?

A great deal. Google looks at the Core Web Vitals: content loading under 2.5 seconds, responsiveness under 200 milliseconds, layout stability under 0.1. Often the heaviest thing is the images: making them lighter is the first move.

What are AI Overviews and how do you get into them?

They are the answers written by artificial intelligence that Google now shows on one search in four or five. You get in with well-structured content, precise claims backed by sources, regular updates, and by not blocking the AI crawlers in robots.txt.
